Island Community Development in Cambodia

1. In Brief

Visit the alluring and exotic country of Cambodia and discover its incredible combination of dramatic landscapes, captivating cultural and historical heritage, and of course, its friendly people. Visitors from the world over have fallen in love with Cambodia, with its enchanting and unique Asian culture, and complex, mystical ambience. You will be living on the paradise island of Koh Rong, fringed with palm trees and white sandy beaches. Let the spirit of Cambodia bewitch you with its vibrant culture, heavenly beaches, dazzling sea life, and warm welcoming people – the perfect paradise location for your adventure!

For all its magnificence, however, Cambodia remains one of the poorest countries in South East Asia. The majority of Cambodians live in impoverished rural areas and with the population in Cambodia steadily growing, problems are emerging; a lack of educational facilities, inadequate infrastructural development, and insufficient employment prospects are now commonly found throughout the country.

This project will present you with the unique opportunity to work with enthusiastic and lively Cambodians and contribute to providing an improved quality of life for rural communities. You will become heavily involved in teaching and playing with local school children, renovating village infrastructure, regular on-site village restoration and clean-ups, and other community development initiatives. The work you’ll carry out will be rewarding, challenging, and hugely beneficial, as well as being fantastic fun. You will gain immense satisfaction from knowing that all your efforts are going towards improving the quality of life for so many people. Take part in this once in a life time opportunity and never look back!

2. The project

The aim of the Cambodia Island Community Development Project is to facilitate and implement the development objectives of this local NGO in order to improve the lives of the local islanders of Koh Rong Samloem. Poverty, and it's consequential impacts such as lack of education, inadequate health care, and poor infrastructure have left the people of rural Cambodia particularly vulnerable. This capacity building project is based within the only village on the island and works to support a range of education and renovation projects. For all its vulnerabilities, this Cambodian island is a beautiful, awe inspiring location that will motivate and encourage you to help these warm hearted friendly people.

Although day to day activities may vary throughout your stay on this glorious island, improving community infrastructure, providing crucial teaching support and training, whilst additionally renovating community buildings and developing regular village clean-up and recycling projects will form the basis of your daily itinerary. There will undoubtedly be lots of additional community activities for you to lend a helping hand to!

You will be working in the heart of the island community, getting involved in important tasks. The people you are helping will be very hard working and appreciative of your contribution to their community, and will be incredibly responsive to your presence on the project. Although the work may occasionally be arduous, it will be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling, creating memories that will stay with you for the rest of your life!

3. What to expect

You will be met upon arrival at Phnom Penh International airport by our driver from Cambodia before transferring down to Sihanoukville, where you will meet the project coordinator and transfer to the island. Please fly into Phnom Penh on the Monday.

You will be staying in a typical Cambodia shared volunteer house built on wooden stilts and based within the village, with small but comfortable rooms. The house has basic facilities including a bucket shower, and limited electricity subject to power cuts. There is no washing machine so be prepared to wash your clothes by hand. You will soon feel very much at home and part of the community.

You will enjoy three delicious meals a day, consisting of basic local Khmer cuisine, and vegetarian diets can be catered for. This gives you the chance to try out dishes such as delicately spiced curries, fresh local market produce, and delicious organic fish, fruit and vegetables.

6. Extras

You may like to take the opportunity to travel in Cambodia before or after your project. If so you will undoubtedly explore the mystical world of the temples of the Khmer Empire, with its beautiful unspoiled monuments, magical atmosphere, and charming monkeys tumbling amongst the ruins. Or take a road trip through the rice paddy fields, and catch a glimpse of the age old farming techniques that are still in use today.

In your spare time you'll have opportunities to swim in the sparkling blue waters around the island, or to play football or volleyball on the beach.

After a long hard day you may prefer to relax with a soda and sway in a hammock, or sit and chat to your new friends beside a roaring beach campfire, under a sky lit up by millions of stars.

Cambodia's marine life is dazzlingly beautiful and is a snorkeler’s paradise. If you'd like to get closer to the deep reefs during your stay we can arrange scuba diving training or individual dives through a local provider* (prices available on request). As you can see, there is certainly no shortage of fantastic opportunities to join in on!

* Please be aware that the cost of any such optional extras are not covered by your project contribution.

Flights are not included in our project costs. However, we have partnered with an experienced and professional team of travel experts to help our volunteers find the best flight deals for their trips with us. This travel specialist operates in the tailor-made, long haul multi-stop travel market, arranging complex airfares and transfers for independent travellers. They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

We recommend that you obtain a quote using the following contact details rather than book online, as our partner will offer you the most competitive fares. To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact our dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@flightcentre.co.uk .

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.
